Abstract:
“Cloud and Crowd” technologies for creating cutting edge AAA games and innovative new interactive experiences. With Amazon’s Lumberyard AAA game engine, Amazon Game Services’ GameLift supporting session-based multiplayer games, Amazon Web Services for cloud-based game features, and Twitch, etc.; Amazon brings a broad selection of technologies to bear on video game design and development. Join us to explore an overview of Amazon’s GameDev technologies and their educational offerings in support of student projects and faculty research.

Speaker Bio:
Michael Edmonds is Head of Education for Amazon Game Services. He is a policy specialist and industry employment researcher with over twenty-five years of experience in entertainment arts and video game development. Prior to Amazon, he launched the Autodesk Media and Entertainment Division’s educational initiatives and ran their outreach programs for over a decade. He’s consulted for SoftImage, the Foundry, and more recently, ran global education policy and outreach at Unity Technologies, Inc. prior to his move to Amazon. Edmonds has testified for the California State Assembly’s Committee On Critical Issues in support of the state’s entertainment economy, and with various state departments of education, accreditation boards, NGOs, the US Department of Education, Congress and the White House on issues of technology, economic development and employment. He is the recipient of two congressional awards for technical innovation and public service.

SILVIA - AI in a Game Development Pipeline

Abstract:
Cognitive Code will discuss and demonstrate the use of its portable SILVIA Platform AI system in the context of a game development pipeline, with a focus on Unity. This will include developing AI content in SILVIA Studio, creating voices for characters, export and integration with a Unity project and iterative development of conversational game experiences. We will also discuss and demonstrate various types of game experiences that can be developed and enhanced with conversational AI.

CSCI-529 Advanced Games for Fall 2016 & Spring 2017

The USC GamePipe Laboratory begins its eleventh year of CSCI-529 Advanced Games, the year-long game design & development course founded by the GamePipe Laboratory's Director, Michael Zyda, in Fall 2005. This year's games include students from multiple curricula throughout USC and outside universities such as the prestigious Game Art & Design Program at the Laguna College of Art & Design. The games chosen in the Spring 2016 contest for development over the next two semesters are the following:

  • BoltCraft: A cooperative, wave-based, third-person action game where you customize your robot's abilities and appearance and deploy helpful minions to defend yourself and your team against an onslaught of enemies. Web site is here.
  • Threshold: A VR escape room experience in a computer generated environment. Web site is here.
  • Polyminis: A sci­fi sandbox game about evolution; the player takes the role of a god­like entity that travels across the universe and guides evolution of species in diverse planets. Video demo is here.
  • Sub-Earth: An underwater first-person virtual reality adventure game, where players experience an immersive subterranean world and use their wits to navigate a series of challenges to achieve their goals. Some art is here.
  • Hide and Seek: A find and chase game that brings the excitement of shooters to a non violent scenario. Some art is here.
