The USC GamePipe Laboratory celebrated its third complete semester of game development degree courses Dec. 12 in its home at USC Viterbi School of Engineering's Tutor Hall. And industry, represented by a long lineup of representatives, responded with enthusiasm: " We're excited to see the progress that the program has made," said an attendee from Disney Buena Vista Games, in the course of inquiring about how to get in contact with one student team. About 80 universities nationwide have some sort of video gaming curriculum, with the University of Southern California among the top three. LOS ANGELES--With computers lining the walls and a media center in the back, the University of Southern California GamePipe Laboratory would be a haven for any gamer. Yet, beyond the fun, the department has introduced new undergraduate and graduate-level computer science degrees in games, allowing students to prepare for work in the ever-growing gaming industry. Although the Information Technology Program has offered a number of minors in video game design and aesthetics over the past few years, students were unable to major in the specialized area until now. The bachelor's degree, which was formally created on June 30, is composed of a group of courses in computer science alongside a number of classes focusing on gaming itself. The USC GamePipe Laboratory celebrated its second complete semester of game development degree courses on the May 9 at USC Viterbi School of Engineering's Tutor Hall, room 321. Students in courses on serious games, advanced game projects, and networked artificial intelligence demonstrated live their developed games for an august panel of game industry executives. Shown in the demonstrations were prototypes of both entertainment and serious games, including Erm's Migration, Dying, Corporashun, Origin, Cahokia, Tame Tom, Warmaster, the Last Battle, Incident Commander, Cloud, and the NSF-funded ....
